James Goldman, born June 30, 1927, in Chicago, Illinois, and died October 28, 1998, in New York City, was an American writer, playwright, and screenwriter. A playwright, he wrote two successful plays, They Might Be Giants (1961) and The Lion in Winter (1966). Both plays were adapted for film under the eponymous titles in 1968 and 1971 by Anthony Harvey. In 1969, he received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Lion in Winter. In 1965, he published his first novel, The Pool of Spy-Spys (Waldorf). It is a "satire that runs counter to traditional spy stories," described as a "pleasant surprise" by Claude Mesplède. James Goldman died in New York City of a heart attack.
