Kevin Brownlow is an English director and film historian, born on June 2, 1938, in Crowborough, East Sussex. Kevin Brownlow is one of the leading specialists in the history of silent cinema, to which he has devoted a large part of his career. He is notably responsible for the most important reconstruction of Abel Gance's Napoleon, to which he devoted some twenty years, identifying 19 different versions. He is also responsible for numerous works, in the form of books and films, on this period of cinema: Buster Keaton, D. W. Griffith, and Charles Chaplin have been the subjects of documentaries he directed. He has also directed several fiction films, including It Happened Here (1962), co-directed with Andrew Mollo, a historical-fiction film about the occupation of England after its invasion by the Nazis in 1940; He is also the author of Winstanley (1975), which tells the true story of a group of Surrey Protestants who attempted to establish a farming community based on Christian communism in 1649. He received an Honorary Academy Award, presented to him at the Governors Awards ceremony on November 13, 2010.[1][2] This award was mentioned, in the presence of the winners, at the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony on February 27, 2011.[3]
